Baylor Football 2009: HOPE is on the horizon

Is this the season that Baylor finally gets back to a long-awaited bowl game? Art Briles could be a candidate for Big 12 Coach of the Year if the Bears do. Robert Griffin is looking to improve on his stellar freshman campaign at QB. Jay Finley and Kendall Wright give the offense credible threats alongside Griffin. Defensive studs Joe Pawelek and Jordan Lake anchor an improved defense. Last year, close losses to Connecticut, Nebraska, Missourri, and Texas Tech ultimately kept the Bears out of the postseason. Could this be the year Baylor finally smells some success? Here's the schedule...

  • Wake Forest: The Deamon Deacons lost Alphonso Smith, but they still return Ryan Skinner at QB. It is very tough to win at Wake Forest. Both teams will be excited and pumped for this opening game, but I think the Deacons will prevail. LOSS
  • Connecticut: A home date with the Huskies will be a great atmosphere. The Bear's close three point lost to them last year will give them the motivation needed to win this game. WIN
  • Northwestern State: Last year the Bears passed and ran all over these guys and I expect them to do the same this year. WIN
  • Kent State: The Golden Flashes are a formidible football team, but no way Baylor is going to squander the opportunity to be 3-1 heading into Big 12 play. WIN
  • Oklahoma: Opponents rarely go into Norman and escape with a win. Sam Bradford will have fun picking apart the Baylor secondary like he did last year in Waco. LOSS
  • Iowa State: This team is definitely in a rebuilding stage right now. The Bears will have to win in Ames to prove that they deserve to not be considered a cellar dwellar team anymore. WIN
  • Oklahoma State: The Cowboys have a very explosive offense led by Zach Robinson and Dez Bryant. This game will turn into a shootout. I really want to think the Bears can win, and they can if they put up an inspired effort, but I think the 'Pokes will simply be to much for the Bears. LOSS
  • Nebraska: Last year's score did not indicate how close the game actually was. The Bears were seemingly almost going to pull the upset before Joe Ganz helped the Huskers pull away. This time the game is in Waco, and the result will be different. WIN
  • Missourri: This game is an unknown. How good can the Tigers be without Chase Daniel? The Bears nearly beat Mizzou before succumbing by three. This is my upset prediction. Bears take it in Columbia. WIN
  • Texas: Colt McCoy's return likely mean's another season of misery for the Bears against the Longhorns. Texas is always very talented and the Bears are not quite to their level yet. LOSS
  • Texas A&M: This is an important game for Baylor because they need to prove that last season's win was no fluke. This will be a game where emotions will be very high. The Bears will take this one from the Ags. WIN
  • Texas Tech: Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree are gone. But there always seems to be another QB ready to step in and post crazy numbers in Lubbock. However, you can't replace a guy like Crabtree. WIN

FINAL RECORD: 8-5

If Baylor can go 3-1 or 4-0 in the non-conference schedule, they will have a very bright prospective for the remainder of the season. The important thing is to avoid potential missteps against either Northwestern State or Kent State (i.e. Texas A&M vs. Arkansas State). Once in conference play, it will be crucial for the Bears to have a winning record against their northern opponents. Failure to do so could leave the Bears in a situation they want to avoid. Losses to Texas and Oklahoma seem presumptive for now. A win against Oklahoma State seems a little far-fetched. But everything else is wide open. I think there are three keys to success for the Bears this season: 1) Avoid a non-conference disaster. 2) Protect the home-field. 3) Have a winning record against the Big 12 North division. If the Bears can manage to do these things, there is no doubt in my mind the Bears are capable of great things. I look forward to this season!

Baylor Football 2009: HOPE is on the horizon

Seems to be a pretty in-depth analysis.  Thanks for all the hard work.

Being a Husker Homer, I take issue with Baylor beating Nebraska this year.  I give Baylor a 35-40% chance.  Playing in Waco will be an advantage for the Bears.  The biggest problem I see Baylor having this year is that they won't be able to sneak up on anyone like they did last year.  Nebraska played two different halves against Baylor.  Baylor pretty much did what they wanted in the first half, but were kept out of the end zone in the second half.  Nebraska's defense will have another year of seasoning and it will definitely be their strength.

In order to win on the road against solid football teams (like Baylor), you need a strong defense to shut down, or in this case, slow down the opposition.

Yes, Nebraska has plenty of questions on offense as they break in a new quarterback and are not as experienced as they would like to be at receiver.  The o-line should be solid along with the running game this year though, which will allow both the QB and receivers time to mature.

This Halloween game should be a good one.  Good Luck to the Bears the rest of the year.
